My Story
Ellen Dougherty
I was married in 1977, and this is the story of my wedding dress. Inspired by my love of sewing, my passion for American history, the recent Bicentennial of America, and a piece of imported French lace, I designed my wedding gown. With a Colonial influence, my dress featured a square neckline, lace leg-of-mutton sleeves, and a lace overskirt. I also incorporated my mom’s hoop skirt slip from her wedding dress and borrowed the veil from my cousin, who had been the flower girl in my parents’ wedding. I can relate to a bride’s desire to blend old and new to create her dream dress.
